  • Overview

    The Manager of Lab Operations plays a significant role in the smooth operation and overall safety of the laboratory.  This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the lab, including but not limited to: instruments/equipment, users of the lab, and supplies needed to ensure the lab runs smoothly.   The position requires an organized individual with strong attention to detail and a solid understanding of the activities, processes, and policies necessary for efficient and compliant laboratory operations.


    Laboratory Manager Job Duties

    • Maintain laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
    • Manage on-site visits from vendors as required.
    • Work with research personnel on purchases of new equipment, calibration, cleaning/decontamination as required, and disposal of outdated and non-functioning equipment.
    • Maintain laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies and supply to lab areas.
    • Develop asset inventory tracking systems.
    • Develop effective relationships with scientific and operations staff to understand lab needs.
    • Oversee, coordinate, and track the hazardous chemical waste, biological waste, glass waste, plastic waste, and solid lab waste, ensuring the safe removal of all lab waste.
    • Ensure and promote Good Lab Practices (GLP) and safety, including participation on the General Safety Committee meeting.
    • Manage chemical inventory databases and safety data sheets.
    • Create and maintain applicable lab and safety documentation and perform audits as necessary.
    • Create and draft policies

    EHS Job Duties

    • Manage EH&S activities and Environmental Compliance - OSHA, MA, DEP, MWRA, and other regulations.
    • Revise trainings, manuals and policies to be more interactive and current to meet state, federal and local requirements.
    • Provide trainings to new hire employees, trainings to lab personnel.

    • Management Proficiency, Develop and Maintain Processes, Equipment Maintenance, Lab Environment, Technical Understanding, Exceptional organizational, record-keeping and communication skills (verbal and written)
    • Maintains a can-do attitude, especially in a fast-paced environment
    • Partners with scientific staff and welcomes tasks requested by them
    • Proactively identifies new opportunities to improve lab safety and efficiency
    • Able to lift/move up to 25 pounds
    • Able to perform other work assignments; which may include lifting, bending, stooping, sitting, leaning, etc.
    • A team player, who listens effectively and invites response and discussion
