Agenus, a biopharmaceutical company focused on immunology-based approaches to the discovery and development of novel therapies for cancer and infectious diseases, is seeking a highly-motivated biochemistry/process scientist to work in our Process Development group.  This position entails working with an interdisciplinary team members to design and develop manufacturing processes for therapeutics within the immune-oncology space such as cancer vaccines


  • Develop and perform laboratory scale protein purification using conventional chromatography and FPLC
  • Perform analytical studies of proteins
  • Perform ultrafiltration and diafiltration with tangential flow filtration equipment
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data to communicate results and continuously improve process performance and understanding
  • Keep good written and electronic records to support protein production and process improvements
  • Coordinate activities with Contract Manufacturing Organizations such as tech transfer, data analysis and GMP runs according to timeline and quality
  • Stay current with industry standards and trends. Evaluate new technologies, procedures, and technical developments.
  • Perform process/tech-transfer for assigned projects and supervise projects over time
  • Responsible for performing the process evaluation and facility fit including materials, and identifying required equipment for new processes to be implemented in the GMP-manufacturing facility.
  • Perform scale-up with required adaptations and process improvements
  • Discuss and present results, both internally and externally, to successfully transfer processes
  • Monitor, analyze and evaluate process data and trends
  • Create campaign/summary reports
  • Responsible for high quality of documentation, laboratory notebooks, protocols, development reports, tech transfer reports, etc.


  • Ph.D. with a focus in Biopharmaceuticals and/ Bioengineering or relevant technical field and 1-3 years of professional experience or equivalent
  • Experience with GE AKTA FPLC instrumentation and UNICORN software
  • Knowledge and experience in laboratory scale protein production using HIC (hydrophobic interaction chromatography), SEC (size exclusion chromatography), mixed mode chromatography, IEX (ion exchange chromatography) and affinity chromatography
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of upstream cell culture processes, experience in E. coli manufacturing a plus
  • Enthusiastic team player with passion for growth and innovation. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills, including technical report writing and presentation abilities
  • Must be able to effectively work well in a cross functional team environment
